LEAVING THE UK

Client Scenario

As business becomes ever more global and our clients’ personal interests diversify, we are regularly engaged by clients looking to move abroad. This can be for a multitude of lifestyle and commercial reasons, and we are ideally placed to help guide them through this process.

Our Service

We have worked with a large number of clients on international relocations:

  • An ultra-high net worth family moving to the UK from Russia for the children to attend school. Our vast experience of the UK non-domicile regime for those moving from abroad allowed us to provide valuable tax and structuring advice before the clients arrived.
  • A husband and wife who were equal owners of a manufacturing business in the North of England who wanted to live in a sunnier climate. They were open-minded as to where they may wish to live in Europe, and our experience of the favourable tax regimes in countries such as Italy, Spain and Portugal meant we could share practical insights to help inform their decision.
  • A recently-divorced individual who wished to start a new chapter of his life abroad, with particular interest in Switzerland having spent many happy family holidays there. Working with Swiss counsel, we provided an overview of the key tax, lifestyle and practical considerations for different cantons (which vary drastically) before project-managing the client’s relocation.
  • Working with Italian counsel to obtain a binding ruling for a client moving under the ‘non-habitual resident’ lump tax sum regime, giving her certainty as to her Italian tax position.
  • A high net worth individual moving to Jersey, where he had already established substantial business interests and wished to be closer to their activities on a day-to-day basis. This included structuring the purchase of a local property and managing the breaking of the client’s UK residence under the Statutory Residence Test.
  • A high profile Middle Eastern businessman relocating his family to the UK for reasons of security, lifestyle and excellent education, while he travelled extensively overseas. As an independent firm, we were able to assure the client of measures we could put in place to maintain client confidentiality within the Knox group of companies whilst not compromising on service.

Outcome

Our independence, combined with expansive networks of contacts in almost any conceivable jurisdiction, means we provide a level of service to rival the biggest multinational firms.

Our director-led approach sets us apart, as every client will always have direct access to the Lancaster Knox senior team to discuss their affairs directly.
